Facebook face off

It is not business as usual on the official CUC facebook group cuclive. The page which is usually fully of philosophical talks and adverts is now filled with political talk as opposing political camps try to outdo each other. Recent posts on the forum indicate that Mr James Kirimi and Mr Augo are the most popular on the social sphere although this could be attributed to the fact that both are new to CUC politics. Mr Kirimi is the immediate director of education while Mr Augo unsuccessfully vied for the position of treasurer in the last elections.

Mr Kirimi's supporters on Facebook have been arguing that he has more experience having served in the previous regime. Mr Augo's supporters say that all that is needed is an  change. Already it seems that Augo's has adopted the slogan "Mageuzi pap!"

Omulloh Augo: This is just the start

There are conflicting views about this man. While some view him as a reformist, some view him as an extremist who is looking for a reason to get at loggerheads with the university administration. His name came to the light last year when he unsuccessfully tried to petition the former chairperson Mr. John Wanjiru to convene an AGM.  Mr Wanjiru declined claiming that the petition papers did not have student’s registration numbers.
What followed was a long tussle between Mr Augo and Mr Wanjiru that saw the latter accuse Mr Augo for incitement. Mr Augo argues that the constitution stipulates that the AGM should be held at least once a year.  The reason for people not putting their registration numbers on the petition according to him is that people feared victimization.
“People should not think that I am going to fight the administration but I am going to represent them in every corner of the institution, "
He says he believes in consultation, tolerance, dialogue and most of it all he is liberal. He also says he likes consensus building.
“I believe in leadership where people’s mandate and views take precedence,” he told me.
So how is going to serve the students if he is elected? He told me if he elected he would ask for the long holiday be scraped He said that space should not be an issue since the administration has intakes after every four months.  He also promised to advocate for more lecture rooms, computers, accommodation.
“You and I know that what we need in this university is not a supermarket, hotel, swimming pool or sort of business “
He also stated that students need an effective catering and not a mess where 3 pieces of bread cost 10 shillings. He said a social hall should be built.  The current social hall also doubles as the mess.
On the arbitral hiking of rents by proprietors, he promised to put an end to that. The last council was unable to rein the proprietors a fact that saw rents increase tremendously.
He also promises to make sure that students were given their provisional transcripts in good time. Last semester students had to on long holiday without their transcripts.
The biggest part for Mr Augo is to convince the electorate to elect him in.Will this be the start of Augo or the end of him? We have to wait and see.

Media equipment acquired

The chuka university Communication and media department has acquired media equipment  worthy 7.2 million. The long awaited equipment was delivered to the institution yesterday morning.  According to H.N  Nabea the equipment was supposed to arrive last year but because of a technical hitch they were delayed . Mr Nabea had to call off his lecture to go and receive the equipment. The action has been hailed as a big step towards  helping Kenya achieve vision 2030.

The students who had expressed their fears of being half baked can put a smile . But even with that the students fear that the bureaucracy in the institution will delay setting up of the equipment. Students had indicated that they had been faced with problems during internship as they had only been exposed to  theory and not the practical aspect of the course.

Claims of electoral crimes ahead of CUSA polls

Claims of voter bribery and tribalism have emerged ahead of the CUSA elections scheduled for 10 th  February.  Supporters of a particular candidate vying for the post of the chairperson are alleged to be going around recruiting vocal members in order to help them convince "people from their community ".

A member of Mr Omulloh Augo's campaign team whom we can not  identify for now, narrated to us how supporters had approached him from a rival group. He claimed that he was offered 300 ksh and asked to mobilize members of his community, which he declined.

Many aspirants are still at the planning stage although Mr Augo and Mr Kirimi have declared their candidacy for the chairperson seat. Another contestant who has been mentioned but which www.chikeo.blogspot.com is yet to confirm is Peter.

Social media has been embraced by some of the contestants with Mr Kirimi's chief campaigner Mr. Aggrey Buchunju being the first to announce Mr kirimi's candidacy. Supporters of  Augo have reacted to different posts on the official CUC Facebook group portraying him as rebellious.
