Police spoil party

Policemen from Chuka police station reportedly tear gassed  and chased celebrating students on Friday night. The students who were in celebratory mood had allegedly reportedly blocked the Meru- Nairobi highway before the police were called in to restore calm. The police chased the students to school and they reported threw canisters into the university compound prompting students in Kirinyaga house to run to safety.

However an announcement on the university noticeboard indicated that the area OCS had apologized over the incident especially continued pursuit of students to the university compound. The announcement signed by the incoming CUSA vice chairperson also states that it is motorists who informed the policemen of the commotion on the road and urged students to restrict their celebrations within the university  premises in order to maintain the cordial relationship that has existed between the community and the university.

Augo clinches top seat.

Omulloh Augo emerged victorious in yesterday's CUSA elections. Augo garnered 532 votes against Kirimi's 512 in the hotly contested elections. The tallying and counting exercise which was carried in the pavilion attracted a large number of students. From the beginning of tallying the race looked tough and the winner was unpredictable but towards the end it was clear Augo had taken the lead with 20 votes. The crowd which had been following the tallying exercise keenly broke in jubilation even before the official counting begun.

Augo who had all this long been away sneaked to the venue and was mobbed  by supporters and carried all the way to the polling center. The incoming Treasurer Gideon Osamong also made a dramatic entry . He arrived and stripped his shirt and even carried Mageuzi's chief campaigner on the shoulders. Rosemary Wairimu, Augo's running mate was also mobbed by the enthusiastic crowd. In his maiden speech Augo said in politics there are no enemies but opponents and therefore all should embrace unity because we share a lot.

He also reiterated that he was going represent students in the students council and not going to oppose the University administration. During the campaigns supporters of his opponent had tried to paint him as a radical which he has always vehemently denied. Augo also stated that he was going to make sure the students are respected. In his campaign pledges he had promised to advocate for students rights.

Voting underway

The race to choose CUSA representatives began today at 6:00 AM today and it is still going on at the pavilion. The exercise which is said to end at 1:00 PM has witnessed a large turn out from the time it started at 6:00. The   various candidates have voted. The Exercise has so far been peaceful. When the CUJC team visited the polling station there were two long ques of people lining to vote. One of the commissioners informed us that half the  voters had voted. The electoral commission had also opted to use transparent boxes. By the time of going to press the ballot boxes were almost full and when we inquired about that they told us they had asked voters to fold the ballot boxes more than twice. Counting of the votes is expected to start at 1PM immediately after voting is closed.

Omulloh Augo has refuted Kirimi's allegations that he he helped. Kirimi had said in the public debate that he had ever helped Augo financially and that he will mention others he had ever helped financially and emotionally in the subsequent debate.In an exclusive interview with www.chikeo.blospot.com Augo termed the allegations as baseless and meant to demean him. He also told us he had written to the electoral commission although the commission was reluctant. Augo told us that he did not need to write to the commisssion as all members were present and even wondered why the commission had not taken action. He said the constitution was explicit on the same.

On the claims that Kirimi leaked him information on how to defend himself when he was accused of incitement Augo said that those were blatant lies as Kirimi was not privy to the situation at that time. He said only Livingstone Ochwando the former director welfare was aware of that because the were living in the same room with the former Chairperson. He said Kirimi only came to know about when the matter reached to the principal.

Candidate earns himself a nickname

Gideon Osamong a candidate for the post of Treasurer has earned himself a nickname after he stated that he will ensure that he contain the price of the most popular commodity-sukuma wiki. Gideon who has become now popurlaly known as Sukuma had said during yesterday's public debate that he will make sure sukuma retails at two shillings. A message going around from his requesting people to vote for him uses the word sukuma. The message partly reads "Plz vote 4 Gideon Akou (sukuma) 4 TREASURER.plz forward to many thanks.

Campaign launch faces hitches

The official CUSA electoral commission campaign launch was yesterday marred by technical hitches and constant power failure. The event which was to have been held in T1 was changed at the last minute without any explanation. As a result Chairperson hopeful James Kirimi's official campaign launch was hurriedly conducted to the ire of his supporters. Kirimi had made a grand and thunderous entry to the school only to be told that that he had only been given 10 minutes to complete his campaign launch.

When the electoral commission campaign launch  commenced candidates were regularly interupted by the deputy Chairperson of the electoral commission Tyrus Otieno because of time. There were frequent power blackout which interrupted the session. The public address system  also interrupted Augo's speech. The final blow came when power went off . In the darkness a fighting match ensued between supporters of the rival camps. Finally Augo had to do with his a half address while Kirimi had to called the day off without addressing the audience.

Electoral commission announces clerk jobs

The CUSA electoral commission has announced the poll clerk jobs. The deadline of the application is 4:00 toady. This is bound to raise eyebrows given that the mode of communication is not effective.
The applicants are required to apply to the dean's office  according to the notice on noticeboards in the school.

James Kirimi had his official campaign launch disrupted yesterday after the electoral commission changed its venue for their official campaign launch from T1 to the Pavilion. Kirimi had made a grand entry to the school with a motorcade only to be informed  of  the changes. Although he was not contented with that his team had to hurriedly introduce themselves.

According to Kirimi he had prepared well for the occasion and he said he had been disheartened by the outcome of the events. His rival  had successfully  launched his campaign last Thursday and Kirimi hoped to counter the reception. Sources privy to Kirimi's campaign strategies informed us that a lot of time and efforts to prepare for the day.


Kirimi' s supporters have   expressed their  displeasure with yesterday is happenings. Some are pointing the fingers at the electoral commission for spoiling what they call a grand day for Kirimi.

The 'mageuzi pap' affiliation recently converged in T1 which was filled with tens of hundreds of their supporters to launch their election campaigns and strategies. The rally was spear-headed by their chairperson, Omullo Augo who amid cheers, in his speech, promised his followers many fortunes if

elected. Ranging from free consultations, transparency, consensus building, inclusiveness, tolerance, unity and transparency, he continued to say that integrity will always remain the greatest pillar to be observed by his team. During this electioneering period, the electorates are so much eager to assess the scope of potentiality in all the nominated candidates. This not withstanding, there opponents, on the other hand, have since played it cool and have not been seen doing much. Some sources say that they are still gearing up for a hot round of campaigns ahead and with a week remaining, it is not clear whether their launch will be this Monday as was hinted by a source privy to their leadership. 'Mageuzi Pap' launch followed the nomination of candidates by the CUC Electoral Board on 6th of this month, giving the qualified candidates a go ahead to continue their campaigns. After delaying for a year now, the college has set Friday, 10th 2012 to be the

appropriate date for Chuka University Students Association(CUSA) elections.

In the wake of recent days, the news about communication and media students staging a public debate for the two contesting camps to unveil their policies have received mixed reactions from dozens of students across the campus. With many optimistic and a couple of them pessimistic about its benefits, what remains to be seen is 'who will be more convincing?' But as all this happen, the anomalies are setting in and the

'Mageuzi Pap' alliance diehards have been heard repeatedly accusing their co-contestants of sourcing funding from external sources to boost their campaigns ahead of the elections. They also went ahead to claim that this is purely against the recently promulgated Chuka University College constitution.

Chairperson hopeful Augo officially launched his campaign in T1in the science block building. Flanked by contestants of various posts in the upcoming election Augo was upbeat that his alliance would win the election. In his address  attended by a big number of students ,Augo assured students that he will ensure that both their students and constitutional rights are respected . He even questioned why students had to ask permission for them to meet when the national constitution protected right of association and assembly.

" It is only in Chuka university where you have to ask for permission to even call for a meeting like this and stating clearly what you are going to discuss," he stated

Augo promised to immediately call for the annual general meeting he is voted in. He said that although the students constitution stipulated that the  CUSA AGM must be held at least once it had never been the case in the previous regimes. Augo also promised to make sure the mess is efficient. He said the mess should not be a profit making venture but instead it should help students better their future lives . 

"What is the logic in selling 3 pieces of bread at 10 shillings in the mess," Augo questioned

On the issue of long holiday Augo stated that while his opponents had shied away from the subject he was not a coward to  keep quiet from the same.Augo stated that students had to make plans and therefore they had to be informed about the issue of long holiday. Augo argued why students were made to take long in their studies while in other universities it took them a record of 18 months.

He told the crowd that he will to fast track access to transcripts. He said he was going to make sure that an academic calendar was in place. He said students needed to know when to report, sit for CATS and  exams.

In the over 30 minutes delivery Augo assured the students that he will deliver all he promised in his manifesto. Mr Augo also took  to introduce candidates in the Mageuzi pap! alliance. Some of the candidates in the faction include Gideon Osamong , Mildred Atieno , Joash Meraba, Kamau Richard, Patrick Wanjala, Peter Mburu, Elvis Kipkoskey and Rosemary Wairimu.

Public debates to begin on Tuesday

The Chuka University Journalism club has been given the go-head to hold  debates with the candidates. The debates to be held in T1 shall begin tomorrow at 4:00. The electoral commission shall be meeting with CUJC today  to chart the way forward  before tomorrow . The debates shall be moderated by the CUJC members . The CUJC which also publishes Varsity Post shall also be covering the event. We shall be informing you more on the issue after the meeting between CUSA electoral commission and CUJC.

Catholic church concern about elections

The first Sunday of February 2012 has proved that Kenyans across all divides have made a milestone in shunning away ethnicity and rather resolved for better ways of dealing with leadership issues which for many years have posed serious mistrust amongst scores of citizens across the country. 


For many decades now, the church has always been a sanctuary of peace and anything unspiritual has no place there. In many churches today, the same trend has been maintained and to prove the same, st. Francis ASIS of CUC is leading the way. The chairman, Allan Mwangi, this Sunday invited the two aspirants vying for the CUSA chairmanship, Omullo Augo and Kirimi James to an equal play ground in the church and reminded them that although they subscribe to different opinions, they remain to be very good friends and they should join the church in preaching peace come this Friday. "We share common goals,we share common objectives, "says Augo. And kirimi, as if agreeing with his opponent ended his 15 seconds speech by lamenting about how he had a traumatizing week as he asks the church to continue praying for him.

During such electioneering periods, it is always not unusual to see people take sides depending on their take on situations. Some would go ethnic, some would opt for money, some undecided while others would go extra- miles to propagate all sorts of lies that might trigger animosity. Bearing these in mind, all and sundry is
concern as they ask the school to try and use all its available mechanisms to cushion its members with an umbrella of peace. Communication and Media students are using this momentous period to unveil to the public what they should know by enlightening the CUC fraternity of what it takes to be a real real leader. Kirimi to launch campaign

James Kirimi will officially launch his campaign on Monday. This is after his  rival Omulloh Augo successfully launched his campaign on Thursday. Kirimi who has previously served as the director academics will also take the opportunity to introduce members of his Students Democratic Movement (SDM).  Although the venue for the campaign has not been announced we have been reliably been informed that the launch will go on as planned. Kirimi has declined to reveal the venue at this time but he has promised to inform us about the same tomorrow. We shall be bringing you more on  SDM campaign launch.

He also confirmed that he will be attending today's launch.

23 Cleared to contest

The CUSA electoral commission has cleared 23 candidates to vie for various  posts in the upcoming CUSA. The 23 comprise both the candidates vying for posts in the governing council and the congress.  Richard Kamau and Peter Mburu vying for the post Sec-Gen and Male Hall Representative (non resident) respectively are unopposed. Missing from the list is the female representative (non -resident)

Two horse race for Chairperson post

It is now evident that the race for the seat of Chairperson will be between Mr Augo and Mr. Kirimi. This is after Mr Peter Mburu  who was said to be eyeing the same seat indicated that he will be vying for the post of secretary General. Actually the list of candidates who qualified to contesnst in various postions shows that he will be unoppssed as no other candidate qualified in the same position.

This now indicates that the duel will be between  Augo and  Kirimi. By the time of going to press plans for the campaigns were in high gear in both camps. Campaign teams for the rival camps were laying down strategies to help them win the election. Already the Kirimi camp has announced their party. A post by Kirimi's chief campaigner Aggrey Buchunju on CUC Facebook indicated that they had formed Student Democratic Movement (SDM). According to Buchunju several candidates vying for various posts had joined SDM. The candidates are Jeradine Mutunga who is Kirimi's running mate,Osamong Gideon who is eyeing the post of Treasurer,Kelvin Munene (Director Academics) and finally Kelvin Lubanga (Director students welfare).

Augo's camp is yet to name their party of choice and their candidates in various positions but we can reveal that Rosemary Wairimu will be  Augo's running mate. There are also speculations that Elvis Kipkoskey, Richard Kamau and Mildred Mubweka are in Augo's camp.
